Calle Dos Pedestrian Walkway
The Calle Dos Pedestrian Walkway is a key feature of the Barron’s Branch District, the first phase of the ambitious 100-acre Waco Downtown Redevelopment Project. The name “Calle Dos” (Second Street) pays homage to the historic Mexican-American neighborhood that thrived in this area before being dismantled by urban renewal in the 1960s. The redevelopment plans to honor this neighborhood through the Calle Dos Pedestrian Walkway, which connects the core of downtown to the Barron’s Branch District. The walkway includes an entertainment pavilion, a pedestrian bridge over Barron’s Branch Creek, mixed-use development, and La Pila Plaza.
La Pila Plaza is another public anchor that honors the Hispanic heritage of the area. This space is a dedicated cultural space designed around the historic La Pila Fountain, which served as social hub of the original Calle Dos neighborhood. Historically, the fountain was a communal gathering spot where families and children played. The plaza links the historic St. Francis on the Brazos Catholic Church to the recreated fountain and the new waterfront promenade.
